Updated October 26, 2026. Prices checked October 26, 2026.
Ski jackets under $250 are rare in independent tests. Only three had both a test and a price we could read. The REI Co-op Powderbound Insulated scores highest and is the only one with two tests behind it. The Free Soldier and GEMYSE are Amazon brands that OutdoorGearLab tested for people who ski a few days a year. They cost $50 to $72, and they score lower on weather protection and breathability. The waterproofing of those two comes from the seller, and the Amazon listings can change.
How these scores are built. Outer layers are judged mainly on waterproofing, which counts for 45% of the score. Breathability counts 25%, and the other two criteria count 15% each. Based on: OutdoorGearLab's test of 17 men's ski jackets (updated February 2026), Switchback Travel's 2026/27 ski jacket guide, manufacturer specifications, and prices read on REI and Amazon on October 26, 2026. Two of the three jackets are Amazon brands with one test each. We do not test products in person. 5 source pages are linked under the 3 products so you can check each finding. How we score.

OutdoorGearLab gives it 61 out of 100 and its Warm Budget Buy award. It has 80 g of insulation in the body and 60 g in the sleeves, a helmet-compatible hood, vents and a built-in powder skirt.
Switchback Travel names it its Best Budget Ski Jacket. REI owners rate it 4.5 out of 5 across 127 reviews.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab found a front zipper and storm flap that are not waterproof and a boxy fit. Switchback Travel calls it only critically seam sealed and bulky.
The powder skirt is fixed and the underarm vents are short, according to OutdoorGearLab. The tests print $229, and REI lists $249 today.
OutdoorGearLab (59 out of 100) calls it warm, well featured and good value. The synthetic insulation and fleece lining are enough on average winter days without a mid layer.
Amazon owners rate it 4.6 out of 5 across 1,193 reviews.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab lists the waterproofing as a DWR finish and found poor ventilation, a boxy cut and components of modest quality. The seller lists 10K waterproofing and fully sealed seams, which we could not verify.
Amazon sells more than one Free Soldier ski jacket, and we could not confirm which one OutdoorGearLab tested. OutdoorGearLab printed $125, and the Amazon price on October 26, 2026 was $65.99.
Readers in Germany, Canada, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom and Sweden are sent to their own Amazon store, where prices show in local currency. The prices on this page are US prices.
OutdoorGearLab (57 out of 100) says it costs less than a day's lift ticket and performs well for an occasional skier. It also works as a general winter jacket, with a removable hood and plenty of warmth.
Amazon owners rate it 4.6 out of 5 across 11,630 reviews.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab lists the waterproofing as unknown and found no ventilation, a generic fit and the lowest breathability score in its test (3 out of 10). It places it a step below the Free Soldier.
OutdoorGearLab tested a jacket it calls the GEMYSE Men's Mountain Fleece Lining, and the Amazon listings now carry other names. The price depends on color, and OutdoorGearLab printed $110.

How we picked
Each score comes from independent tests (OutdoorGearLab and Switchback Travel), manufacturer specifications and the price on REI or Amazon. We do not test jackets in person. The ratings are our assessment of what the reviewers report, and we used the more cautious figure when sources differed.
All three jackets are insulated. The scoring model has no warmth criterion, so none of them gets credit for the warmth it adds.
About the two Amazon jackets
The Free Soldier and GEMYSE are sold by Amazon brands, and each has one test. Their waterproofing is the seller’s claim: OutdoorGearLab lists it as a DWR finish for the Free Soldier and as unknown for the GEMYSE. Amazon sells several versions of each jacket under changing names, and the one OutdoorGearLab tested may not be the one you see. Check the listing, the size chart and the return policy before you buy.
What we left out
MAGCOMSEN ($110): OutdoorGearLab scored it 48 out of 100, the lowest of its 17 jackets, and it has no ventilation.
Columbia Winter District III ($220): no independent test, and 43 owner reviews on REI.
Free Country Ski Patrol 3-in-1 ($220): discontinued at REI, no independent test.
Decathlon Wedze jackets: not sold in the US store, no independent test.
What to look for
Seam sealing: a critically sealed jacket only seals the seams most exposed to snow
Ventilation: two of these three have little or none
A fit that leaves room for a mid layer without riding up
Questions
Why are the Free Soldier and GEMYSE here if their waterproofing is unclear?
They are the only ski jackets under $250 we found, besides the Powderbound, with an independent test and a price we could read. OutdoorGearLab lists the Free Soldier's waterproofing as a DWR finish and the GEMYSE's as unknown, and both sellers call the jackets waterproof. We scored both low on waterproofing and say so on this page.
Why do the prices differ from OutdoorGearLab's?
OutdoorGearLab printed $125 for the Free Soldier and $110 for the GEMYSE. On October 26, 2026 Amazon showed $65.99 and $49.98 to $69.98. We use the Amazon price on that day, and Amazon prices and listings change often.
Why is the Columbia Winter District III not here?
REI sells it for $220 and 43 owners rate it 4.5 out of 5, but we found no independent test. A product without a test needs at least 50 owner reviews to appear in the owner-rated section.
Why is the Free Country Ski Patrol 3-in-1 not here?
REI marks it as discontinued, and we found no independent test of it.
Why are the Decathlon Wedze jackets not here?
Decathlon's US store does not sell Wedze ski clothing, and we found no independent test of the jackets.
Where do the prices come from?
The regular price on REI and Amazon on October 26, 2026. Sale and outlet prices are ignored.
