Best Premium Running Base Layers

Premium base layers get plenty of reviews, but almost all of them come from hiking and skiing. We found no running test for any of these four. That makes the odor and durability findings more reliable than the wicking scores, since wicking depends on how hard you sweat. Treat the ranking as a guide for cool-weather running.

How these scores are built. Base layers are judged mainly on breathability, which counts for 45% of the score. Comfort and fit counts 25%, and the other two criteria count 15% each. Based on: Manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews on retailer pages. Most independent reviews cover hiking, skiing or general use, not running. Breathability comes from OutdoorGearLab's and GearJunkie's breathability scores where they cover the product, and from our estimate where no test scores it. We do not test products in person. 10 source pages are linked under the 4 products so you can check each finding. How we score.

Pros

  • CleverHiker ranked it first in its 2026 base layer test. REI owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 64 reviews.
  • A Polygiene treatment controls odor, and one owner reports no smell after a sweaty ride stashed in a bag for days.

Cons

  • OutdoorGearLab found the related zip-neck breathes less than looser-weave layers because of its tight fleece construction, so the Rho LT can run warm in hard efforts.
  • Sizing is inconsistent. REI says it fits slightly large, and one owner found it a little big.

Cons

  • OutdoorGearLab says it breathes less than more porous layers and has no venting beyond the quarter zip.
  • OutdoorGearLab reviewed the women's version, and the crew and zip-neck use different fabrics in some listings.

  • Switchback Travel calls it a good fit for cold-weather running, and The Great Outdoors tester found it pulled sweat away well. REI owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 525 reviews.

Icebreaker Merino 260 Tech Long-Sleeve Crewe

Warmest for cold, easy runs, $125 to $140

Comfort and fit 25%

5.5/10

Pros

  • A reviewer reports it kept a runner warm at 20°F once warmed up. REI owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 102 reviews.
  • Packstack's July 2026 review of the lighter Merino 200 Oasis found testers had no sweat smell after hard efforts. The 260 is also merino, though we found no odor test of it.

Cons

  • It is a heavier cold-weather layer. Packstack's review of the Oasis says that line gets damp under a winter jacket and dries slowly.
  • One long-term owner reported a seam fraying early.

How we picked

Each score comes from manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews. None of the independent reviews we found is a running test. They cover hiking, skiing and general use, and several are about the women’s version or a lighter sibling in the same line.

The Icebreaker has the thinnest evidence. We could not find an independent review of the 260 Tech itself, so its odor score borrows from the lighter Oasis.

What we left out

  • Tracksmith Brighton ($88 in a 2023 roundup): a running-specific merino top, but we have not read a US price on Tracksmith’s site.
  • Brooks Notch Thermal Hoodie 2.0 ($98): being discontinued.
  • Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Crew ($125): a heavyweight winter layer, not a running top.

What to look for

  • Odor control, if you wear one top across several runs
  • A fit that stays against the skin without squeezing
  • A fabric weight that matches your cold-weather pace: lighter for hard efforts, heavier for easy miles

Questions

Why is the Icebreaker price a range?

REI lists the Merino 260 Tech Long-Sleeve Crewe at $125.00 to $140.00 depending on color and size. All of that range is above the $100 premium line.

Why do the two Rho LT tops rank so close?

They share a name and treatment, but the sources for the zip-neck cover the women's version and a different fabric in some listings. We kept both because they have separate owner reviews on REI.

Where do the prices come from?

The regular price on REI on October 15, 2026. Sale and outlet prices are ignored.
