Few base layers under $60 have been reviewed by anyone who tested them while running. These three are long-sleeve synthetic tops that REI or independent reviewers describe as wicking and quick drying. None of the reviews we found is a running test, so treat the scores as a guide for cool-weather runs.
How these scores are built. Base layers are judged mainly on breathability, which counts for 45% of the score. Comfort and fit counts 25%, and the other two criteria count 15% each. Based on: Manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews on retailer pages. Most independent reviews cover hiking, skiing or general use, not running. Breathability comes from OutdoorGearLab's and GearJunkie's breathability scores where they cover the product, and from our estimate where no test scores it. We do not test products in person. 7 source pages are linked under the 3 products so you can check each finding. How we score.

Pros
REI owners rate it 4.5 out of 5 from 51 reviews, and buyers mention softness and value.
Spandex gives it four-way stretch, and the underarm gussets help with arm swing.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab found the REI lightweight bottoms heavier than the Patagonia equivalent, less breathable and slower to dry. We found no independent test of this top itself.
It is thin for cold days, and some buyers say the sleeves run long.
CleverHiker calls it one of the best options for high-output activity, and The Great Outdoors tester found it dried extremely quickly after wearing it in the rain.
Its warmth comes from moisture management more than from insulation, so it suits mild and cool days.
Cons
Reviewers say it holds odor. CleverHiker lists it as not odor-resistant, and The Great Outdoors tester said it smelled after hard exercise.
It runs small, the cuffs can be loose, and one tester saw loose threads at the seams.

How we picked
Each score comes from manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews. The independent reviews we found were written for hiking, skiing or general use, and none is a running test. A base layer sits against the skin and moves sweat, so the findings carry over. Running makes you sweat harder and for longer than most of those tests did.
The two REI tops have no independent test of their own. Their breathability, odor and durability scores are cautious estimates built from the fabric description, one comparison of the matching bottoms and owner comments.
What we left out
REI Co-op Lightweight Crew ($34.95): a short-sleeve top.
Decathlon base layers: the US store sells ski, cycling and hiking base layers under $50, but we found no running long-sleeve and no independent review.
Montane Dart Zip Neck: iRunFar’s top pick, but we could only read a UK price.
What to look for
A synthetic fabric, since polyester dries faster than wool
A snug fit, because the layer has to touch your skin to move sweat
A zip or open collar if you tend to overheat
Questions
Why does this ranking include a $50 top?
The Smart Buy band for base layers is under $60. The Helly Hansen LIFA Stripe Crew costs $50.00 on REI, which makes it the most expensive pick here.
Why only three products?
Few long-sleeve tops under $60 have a price we could read on a retailer page and an independent review. We left out the REI Co-op Lightweight Crew at $34.95 because it is a short-sleeve top.
Where do the prices come from?
The regular price on REI on October 15, 2026. Sale and outlet prices are ignored.
