Updated October 16, 2026. Prices checked October 16, 2026.
Only two fleece jackets under $60 had a price we could read and an independent test. OutdoorGearLab scored the Amazon Essentials full-zip 71 out of 100 and the Wrangler Authentics quarter-zip 63. Both are fine for camp and cool mornings. The Amazon jacket is heavy at 15.7 oz, the Wrangler has no pockets, and neither is built for hard climbs.
How these scores are built. Mid layers are judged mainly on warmth, which counts for 45% of the score. Breathability counts 25%, and the other two criteria count 15% each. Based on: OutdoorGearLab's fleece test, prices on Amazon and Walmart listings and owner ratings on Amazon. Each jacket rests on one independent test. We do not test products in person. 3 source pages are linked under the 2 products so you can check each finding. How we score.

Pros
OutdoorGearLab calls the value incredible (63 of 100) and found it breathable, with a casual look.
It weighed 12.5 oz in a size small, lighter than the Amazon fleece.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab found only moderate warmth and no pockets.
The Walmart listing we read is a Wrangler Authentics fleece quarter-zip at $26.31 with 3 reviews. We matched it to the tested jacket by name, and OutdoorGearLab is the only independent test.

Pros
OutdoorGearLab gave it a Best Buy award (71 of 100) for its low price and great next-to-skin comfort.
It is easy to add layers underneath, and Amazon shows 1,214 ratings averaging 4.5 out of 5.
Cons
OutdoorGearLab found excess fabric that bunches, and says you can sweat while wearing it.
It weighed 15.7 oz in the test. Some colors show a struck-through price up to $29.70, in line with the $29 OutdoorGearLab listed.

How we picked
Each score comes from OutdoorGearLab’s fleece test, the weights and notes it published, and a retailer listing. Both jackets have a single independent test behind them, so the scores carry more doubt than in the other hiking rankings. We do not test jackets in person. Ratings are our assessment from what the reviewer reports. Where the test says nothing about durability, we use a neutral score.
What we left out
Columbia Steens Mountain 2.0 ($65) and REI Co-op Trailmade Fleece ($69.95): the guides’ budget picks, but above $60 on REI.
Fleeces that fall under $60 only on sale, such as the Helly Hansen Daybreaker Block Microfleece (regular price $95): sale prices are ignored.
What to look for
Weight: budget fleeces weigh 12 to 16 oz, while technical fleeces weigh 7 to 11 oz
Pockets that clear a hip belt if you hike with a pack
How hard you will work in it, because cheap fleece breathes less on climbs
Questions
Why only two jackets?
REI sells no men's fleece under $60 at its regular price. The budget picks in the guides, the Columbia Steens Mountain 2.0 ($65) and the REI Co-op Trailmade ($69.95), sit in the mid-range ranking.
Why does the Amazon price differ from OutdoorGearLab's $29?
The Amazon page shows $24.20 for the black jacket with no struck-through price, and some other colors show a struck-through price up to $29.70. We use the price with no strike-through.
Where do the prices come from?
The Wrangler price is from a Walmart.com search on October 16, 2026. The Amazon Essentials price is from the Amazon page on October 17, 2026.
