Best Premium Running Jackets

Premium running rain jackets pair high waterproof ratings with low weight. The three below cost between $280 and $450. Waterproofing carries most of the score, and the differences come down to breathability and durability.

How these scores are built. Outer layers are judged mainly on waterproofing, which counts for 55% of the score. The other criteria count 15% each. Based on: Manufacturer specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews on retailer pages. We do not test products in person. How we score.

How we picked

Each score comes from the manufacturer’s specifications, independent reviews and owner reviews, and every product lists its sources. Weights reported by reviewers differ by size and version, so treat them as approximate.

What we left out

  • Arc’teryx Norvan SL Hoody: discontinued.
  • Brooks Canopy Waterproof Jacket: the original Canopy is water resistant, not waterproof, and we found no independent test of the waterproof version.
  • Odlo Zeroweight Dual Dry and Dynafit Traverse GTX: strong results in the 220 Triathlon test, but we could not confirm a US price.

What to look for

  • A waterproof membrane rated at least 20,000 mm
  • Low weight if you carry the jacket on long runs
  • Hood and sleeve fit, which several reviewers flag on premium jackets

Questions

Why only three jackets?

These are the premium running jackets with a confirmed US price and enough independent testing to compare. We would rather list three we can support than five we cannot.

Where do the prices come from?
